Program Note: What a Time is the first piece I wrote in 2021 during which time every day life was not entirely dominated by the COVID-19 pandemic. Getting back to aspects of life in the summer of 2021 after a year stuck inside and on computer screens was both exhilarating and melancholy. This work just begins to grapple with the massive changes our society has undergone since March 2020 and is an initial pass at a reflection. The work opens wonderingly and a touch optimistic before developing into more rhythmic and energetic sections. The piece closes with an epilogue that, in retrospect, feels more like a prayer. It's my hope that the musical and dramatic ideas expressed here resonate with others reflecting on their experiences during this terrifying and turbulent time.

Commisioned By: Cellist Julian Schwarz and Marika Bournaki.

Premiere: Julian Schwarz and Marika Bournaki at the Charles Ives Music Festival with a subsequent performance at the Rehoboth Antiquarian Society. Subsequent performances with Sean Riley (violin version) TBD and the Copland House.
